During the last article I talked about the differences between cheap pavers and discount pavers, and I received a couple of comments wanting me to talk more about second hand pavers, so I decided to come up with this article: Are second hand pavers a good option for your project?
Like I said before, discount pavers are first class pavers with a discount depending on the quantity of materials that you buy from the materials’ company. Second hand pavers are what I call cheap pavers, and I can get you great deals on these pavers, it doesn’t matter the quantity that you need.
Second Hand Pavers “Problems”
You know there’s no perfection when it comes to manufacturing interlocking pavers, or any other type of material, so second hand pavers are the pavers that come with slight problems or defects. When they’re not as bad as you may think, the manufacturer decides to keep this pavers and sell them as second hand pavers. If they were too bad, they’d just dump material. Here’s a list of the most common defects that affect second hand pavers:
* Color Problems:
When passing the quality inspection, if the manufacturer decides the color of these pavers is not as good as high quality pavers, they start removing the less colored pavers to another batch. If you’re looking for solid red pavers, you probably want first class pavers, but if you don’t mind having reddish pavers on your project, these cheap interlocking pavers could be perfect for you.
* Texture Problems:
Some paver designs have a pattern on top of each paver, and when the texture (or design) of that paver doesn’t match exactly the rest, it’s considered a second hand paver. A lot of people take advantage of this situation since they don’t care about “the drawing” on top of each paver. If you don’t mind having pavers with different textures (or drawings), then, you could also take advantage of this situation!
* Design Problems:
Sometimes the pavers have design problems like flawed corners, slightly chipped pieces, missing lockings on the sides, etc. When the material is like this, manufacturers decide to put them in the second hand pallets if the problem is not as bad. I’ve bought a lot of pavers like this for several costumers, and before we install them, we review them carefully to notice the problem on such pavers and fix it.
If a paver is missing the interlocking sides, we fill the space with sand right away to lock it instantly. If a paver has a flawed corner, we flip it, chip it, or put it in a way that you won’t notice the corner problem. We always fixed the problems, so you feel like you paid for first class pavers once your job is completed.
* Measurement Problems:
This is the most difficult problem to fix. The manufacturer decides to put it aside on the second hand pallet pavers when the design, texture and color are perfect, but some of them are slightly bigger, or smaller than the rest of the pavers. It’s easy to fix when everything is bigger, or everything is smaller.
Sometimes we ended up having pallets with big and small pavers, but there’s always a way around it. When you have 20+ years of experience in this job, there’s nothing to difficult to fix. We have installed a lot of pavers with measurement problems, and we end up doing great.
You just have to find out if the pavers are smaller or bigger, measure correctly everything on the spot they’re supposed to go, and cut the pavers to make everything look perfectly normal.
